Planning a couple’s holiday in the land of the long white cloud? New
Zealand with its cool climate and spectacular scenery lends itself well
to getaways for all types of couples. Whether it’s an adventure weekend,
a romantic escape, a sightseeing holiday or an indulgent food and wine
long weekend, New Zealand has it by the bucket load. New Zealand is
overflowing with excellent accommodation options to suit every budget
and style of traveller, whether you are after eco accommodation, luxury
hotels or something in between. Here are three suggestions on places
couples will love.
Dunedin
The spectacular coastline of the Dunedin area is so breathtaking it
can’t help but be romantic. Tunnel Beach with its rock arches, sea and
weather carved sandstone cliffs and caves and secluded beach only
accessed by the hand carved tunnel is moody and dramatic and well worth
the hour round trip to visit. The water is safe to swim in and if you’re
lucky you may have the beach to yourself. The numerous walks around the
area include short walks criss-crossing the Otago Peninsula taking in
the beautiful vistas, tracks around the Taieri River and Silverstream
and walks through the town itself exploring the many iconic buildings
and heritage architecture of the city. Outdoor activities such as
mountain bike riding, surfing and bird watching can be enjoyed in the
region along with spotting some of the rarest animals in New Zealand
including fur seals, Hooker Sea Lions and Yellow-Eyed Penguins. If
you’re looking for well priced quality lodgings the accommodation in
Dunedin won’t disappoint with everything from romantic bed and
breakfasts to world class luxury hotels.
Invercargill
Invercargill is a city full of beautiful surprises and natural beauty.
Settled in the 1850s, Invercargill has a rich history and diverse
architecture ranging from Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco buildings
right through to modern, contemporary structures. Beautiful Queens Park
is spectacular in summer and the Art Gallery at Anderson Park is home to
both international and local artworks along with regular exhibitions.
Beach lovers will love nearby Oreti Beach, only 10km west of
Invercargill. Stretching for over 26km, the smooth sands of Oreti Beach
are the ideal location for a beach horse ride. Dining options in
Invercargill are diverse and the standard of food is high, with most
restaurants sourcing their produce and wine from the local region.
Invercargill accommodation is plentiful and good value and there are
lots of options for couples with a good range of bed and breakfasts,
hotels, motels and farmstays.
Nelson
Home to picturesque long beaches, rugged mountains and pristine forests,
Nelson is a beautiful backdrop for a couple’s getaway. Nature lovers
will enjoy exploring the Abel Tasman National Park with its stunning
lakes, waterfalls and beaches. Visitors can kayak, sail or walk around
the lake and lunch cruises are also available for those wanting to enjoy
a bit of luxury. The Wanui Falls walk is a one and a half hour return
walk taking you to the spectacular Wanui Falls via the Abel Tasman
Swingbridge, a mesh bottom suspended bridge towering above the water.
The swimming holes along the side of the track are safe and lovely and a
great way to cool off on a hot day. If you’re lucky you may have one to
yourself. There is an active art community in Nelson with over 350
artists living and working in the area including traditional, Maori and
contemporary artists showing their work in a number of small and large
galleries. Nelson is also famous for its great local food and wine
including delicious Nelson Bay scallops and fresh seafood. Couples will
love the range of accommodation in Nelson whether they are after a
mountain lodge, a luxury spa retreat or something in between.
